Blackwater Lake

Matthew Stanyer's childhood was not a happy one due to his mother's compulsive hoarding. Now as an adult he's still reluctant to return to the house but his mother's dementia is getting worse. After not hearing from his father for several days after he said he'd call, Matthew goes to their house and finds a note from his father saying he and his wife can't go on this way. The police find their bodies near Blackwater Lake and their deaths are ruled a murder-suicide. Now Matthew has the daunting task of going through the mountains of his mother's hoard. He's taken back to their past - one neither parent ever spoke of - and discovers what may have started his mother's hoarding and why his father chose Blackwater Lake to end their lives. A quick read with some twists and turns.

Dangerous Lies

Teenager Estella Goodwinn is now in WITSEC after witnessing a violent crime and agreeing to testify against the man who killed her mother's drug dealer. She's taken from her friends and family, and the hustle and bustle of city life and plunked in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska for her own safety. Her name has been changed from Estella to Stella. Really creative, especially since she's now in WITSEC because criminals want to find her and kill her. And she HATES the name Stella. Shut up. She's not a likeable character. She's disrespectful to the woman who takes her in. There were so many things I didn't like... the town's baseball star and everyone's leniency towards his actions; Stella's comment about Inny's baby was ignorant; Stella loves Reed, oh wait, no, Stella loves Chet. Ugh.

Dying For Christmas

This story goes back and forth between Jessica and Kim. Jessica Gold has disappeared on Christmas Eve. She's being held captive by a very sick and twisted man who gives her a horrible gift each day to mark the twelve days of Christmas. Kim is the police officer assigned to Jessica's case. She's torn between her job and the promotion she so badly wants, and a life with her husband and two children. The first part of this book was excellent! Five stars! It was very well-written. Jessica's fear and desperation were palpable. While I appreciate how things played out in the second part, it just didn't captivate me the way the first part did. The more I read about Kim the more I didn't like her. Things seemed a little too convenient when it came to her.

Garfield Life in the Fat Lane

A fun way to pass the time. I love Garfield :-)

You

Beck comes into the bookstore where Joe Goldberg works and instantly he is in love. He Googles the name on the credit card she used to pay for the books she wanted. Her Facebook and Twitter tell Joe everything he needs to know - who she is, where she lives, and where she's going to be so that they run into each other (coincidentally, of course) Beck loves attention, especially from other men and the more negative attention, the better. But Joe is patient. He does what needs to be done to insert himself in the role of boyfriend and to ensure that she ends up loving him as much as he loves her. I didn't care for this book starting off, not because it was second-person narrative but because it seemed like Joe took one breath and away he went. But I came to really enjoy his candor and humour.

Remember Mia

This book started off great. I so wanted to know what happened to seven-month-old Mia. Not only does Mia disappear from her crib, but all of her things are gone too. Mia's mother, Estelle, was found days later, barely alive, at the bottom of a ravine, hours away from home, with bits and pieces of her memory. But then the story draaaaaagged onnn. My eyes were reading but my brain was somewhere else, so I had to re-read a lot of paragraphs. I found it jumped around a bit, but that could be me as I lost and gained interest. I did not like the ending. This book was very disappointing.

Pretty Baby

Heidi is a social worker who brings a homeless teen and her baby into the home she shares with her workaholic husband and their 12-year-old daughter. This was a thriller minus the thrill. It was dull and predictable with an absolutely absurd scenario. I did not like the characters, they were flat. Heidi's story became sooo repetitious. Heidi - go pay attention to your own kid.

My Name is Lucy Barton

This book lacked any depth or warmth. It seems to be Lucy Barton's jot notes of her life, with Dr. Seuss-like writing.. "I waited quite a while, quite a while I waited." If I change a few words around in this paragraph I swear the author was talking about me: "By the end of one hour her face looked like it had fallen the way white clay loses its shape when it's not cold enough, that is the image, that her face had dropped into a strange shape from fatigue, and at the end of three hours it seemed even more so, as though her white clay face was almost trembling. It took everything out of her to  teach that class read that book , is what I am saying. Her face was just ravaged with fatigue."

The Memory Box

Caroline Thompson is living a happy life in the suburbs with her husband and their two daughters. The suburban moms there entertain themselves by Googling everyone in town and then spreading gossip, but Caroline tries to avoid these women and she's relieved to be told that her name only appears three times - all about her philanthropy.  Caroline can't stand not to Google her maiden name, though - a name no one in the suburbs knows. By doing this she finds her sister's obituary - she's been dead for years but Caroline doesn't remember it happening. The more she finds out, the more her life unravels and spins out of control. I loved the author's writing. It's always fun to get caught up in a book where I can't turn the pages fast enough - which happened from the very beginning. I really liked the character Caroline. Great ending too.

14 Days to Die

Sarah Johnson is a stay-at-home mother of two healthy, beautiful kids. Her husband is good-looking and hard-working. But he wants her dead. At least that's what the hitman on the phone told her, and if she wants to live she has to come up with a counteroffer.  She has 14 days to decide. I really felt bad for Sarah - what a shock it would be to be put into that situation. Overall the book flowed well, there were lots of twists and turns that'll keep you guessing until the end. Once you start reading you won't want to stop!

Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Journalist Raoul Duke and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo make their way through Las Vegas while on every drug imaginable. Great artwork. I loved the birds-eye view of things. The use of different fonts was great, it would capture their state of mind when the drugs would kick in. At times there was a bit too much text, it felt like a chore to get through it. But not too bad overall. One of my favourite movies :-)

Things Unsaid

This is a story about parents who waste their money and burden their oldest daughter with their debts and expectations that she'll come up with the money to pay them. And while the daughter tries to pay everything off to prove she's better than them, she puts her husband and her daughter second. I didn't like this book. I didn't like any of the characters. I found the writing confusing at times and it got on my nerves when a sentence would start "would love to.." instead of "I would love to.."

The Good Girl

Mia Dennett is waiting in a bar for her on-again, off-again boyfriend but he doesn't show up. After meeting "Owen" she decides to leave with him for the night. But things don't go as she had thought they would - she ends up prisoner in the middle of nowhere in Minnesota.  This book goes back and forth between past and present, and it goes back and forth between Mia's mother, the detective working the case, and the man who took Mia away from her old life. This is a weird one for me - I liked it but I didn't like it. It started off great, and then a few chapters into it, I was like "oh" - I was a bit turned off. The writing was good, the characters were well-developed. I hated the epilogue. I guess the story just seemed a bit dull.

A Sandy's Seashell Shop Christmas

This is a cozy story about a widowed woman who has been taking her three-year-old son to the beach every year instead of celebrating Christmas. It's a hard time of year for Tiff, the time of year when her husband was killed. But when an innocent flyer about a Christmas celebration at Sandy's Seashell Shop comes into their lives, Tiff realizes she isn't being fair to her son. It's here that Tiff finally finds hope for the future. Not only do you get a great read, you get a tongue twister in "Sandy's Seashell Shop" :-)

Dew Point

This is a flat story about a woman whose husband of many years casually announces that he's leaving her. She then sets off to the villa that she inherited from her grandmother years ago. She uncovers secrets while she's restoring the place. Blah, blah, blah. This story was confusing. It had no depth whatsoever. It was boring. I didn't like the ending at all. When the chapters would start, they'd go back and forth between people and for the longest time it wouldn't say who they were.. it was SO FUCKING FRUSTRATING!!!

Sour Candy

Phil Pendelton is picking up chocolate for his girlfriend at Wal-Mart when he hears an ear-piercing scream from a little boy. He never thought that little boy would turn out to be his son. I didn't enjoy the ending as much as the rest of the story, but, as always, great imagination and great writing from KPB.

Diamond Ring

Greta has a big sparkling ring on her finger from the man of her dreams, but planning a wedding is harder than she thought it would be. Not to mention her in-laws don't like her. And her fiancé still hasn't learned that they are meant to be together forever. Just like the previous two books in the series you won't want to put it down until it's finished. There's never a dull moment. Greta and Blake are still twisted. I loved it!

Disclaimer

Documentary filmmaker Catherine Ravenscroft has just moved into a new house with her husband, Robert. It's here that she finds a novel by her bedside that she didn't put there nor did she buy. As she reads on, she realizes that this is her story, her secret - a secret that only one other person knew about, and that person is dead. But things didn't quite happen the way the book portrays and Catherine's life turns into a nightmare as she is forced to travel back twenty years and finally tell the story the way it really happened. It started off okay, but I found myself impatient and irritated by how slow it was going. I had high hopes for this book, but was a little disappointed in it. I loved this:  I bite my fingernails to keep them short, spitting them out and leaving them where they stick, brittle and sharp around my desk. I am not a bloody circus performer, though: I can't do the same with my toenails.

The Alchemist’s Memory

A disjointed (and sometimes confusing) story about a young woman who has just awakened from an attack and discovers she has lost her memory. She takes a trip to visit a clerical healer in hopes of getting some answers to her past and who she is. The amount of spelling errors and grammatical errors really took away from the story. Atrocious.

Mrs. Maddox

A very short story about Abby's first Valentine's Day as Mrs. Maddox.

The Space Between Heartbeats

Nicole Tepper can't remember what happened at the party she was at last night, but it must've been bad because her mother and her friends are giving her the silent treatment. Or so she thinks. Nicole is trapped between life and death. Her body is down a steep embankment in the woods but in her ghost-like state she is wandering the school searching for answers. Only one person can hear her and that's Dale Finnegan - the guy she has relentlessly bullied. He goes to great lengths to help Nicole. This was a quick, suspenseful page-turner! I love this: "Hard for you?" My sarcasm drips off every syllable, like melted caramel on a sundae - thick and delicious.

The Color of Water in July

Growing up, Jess would spend her summers at her grandmother's cottage, but she hasn't been back there in seventeen years. Now her grandmother has passed away and left her the cottage; a cottage that is filled with memories, secrets and if Jess digs deep enough - the truth about her family. It tried, but this book never made it over that edge where it starts to get good. It was slow going at first. I didn't like any of the characters.. Daniel was okay, but nothing special. Things that happened just seemed too convenient.

Party Dress

Greta finally has what she wanted, but things aren't perfect. Yet. With everyone still having doubts about what happened to Amber no one is willing to accept their relationship. But Greta is willing to do whatever Blake wants her to do to fit in with his crowd. And soon enough Blake will learn that he's not the only one with a few tricks up their sleeve. The second in the series doesn't disappoint. It's a page-turner!

Boyfriend Glasses

It was love at first sight for college freshman Greta Bell when she saw her soul mate Blake Abbott at a frat party. Too bad Blake is dating her roommate.  Blake is putting Greta through a test, just like her high school sweetheart did, to find out if her love is true and the lengths she goes to to get what she wants is scary. More than once Greta made me uncomfortable. What went through that poor girl's head - wow. This book is filled with lots of twists and turns. The story flowed well, was easy to read and made you feel like you were there following Greta around (ha ha) Unputdownable!

Eleanor's Gift

Eleanor Rosette is the sole survivor of a horse and carriage accident that leaves her with mysterious marks on her neck. Not long after Lord Welton brings her into his home to recuperate strange things begin to happen. I enjoyed the author's writing as well as her gorgeous illustrations!

We That Are Left

The Melvilles are an aristocratic British family living at Ellinghurst - a family estate that has its share of secrets. During the Melvilles' childhood Ellinghurst was a place of adventure except for family friend Oskar who is picked on and finds solace in the library among the many books. After the Great War the big house loses its charm for sisters Jessica and Phyllis. Jessica longs for the glitz and glamour of London life while her bookworm sister Phyllis dreams of university. The book started off fine even though at the very beginning it was confusing with all the people. I really liked Jessica. Clark's writing was good. But this book was loooooooooooong. Oskar's chapters were boring with all the physics and science and math. Then eventually the whole book was boring and there were too many "bruised" clouds. I received a free copy from Goodreads First Reads.

Words in the Dark

Joe and Nora Cooper were going to enjoy their later years in their newly purchased dream home on Martha's Vineyard. But Joe has been killed, and not only that, he sold their dream home without even telling her. Nora doesn't believe her husband would do something like that, but maybe she didn't know her husband of thirty-five years as well as she thought she did. Searching for answers she gets a little help from Joe in the form of Scrabble letters - a game loved by their whole family. Nora uncovers one nasty truth after another until she has all the answers she was looking for. This book was good! It was so well-crafted. The story was believable - nothing was far-fetched or "convenient". It never dragged on. There were lots of twists and suspense. The characters were believable and well-developed. Unputdownable!

From Ashes Into Light

This book is about strength, courage, spirituality, hope, remembrance and tragedy. It is told by: Ruth - a Jewish adolescent growing up in Austria during the holocaust. Saqapaya - a Stalwart Native American in California during the Spanish conquest. Elfriede Mai - born during World War II to a Bavarian soldier and a East-Prussian mother. Her whole life she has been haunted by memories that are not her own. Friede and her family eventually immigrate to the United States where she meets her spiritual guide, a Rabbi, who helps her find inner peace. Their stories were palpable and for the most part they were really good. I didn't like the Phoenix in the beginning, but I got used to it. The author's imagination and creativity are wonderful.

The Almost Wives Club: Kate

First novel in the series. Kate Winton-Jones is about to marry rich and handsome Edward Carnarvon III. But a curse is put on her dress at her final fitting. From there everything seems to go wrong for Kate.. or does it?  Not a bad read. It's your typical romance novel with nothing to make it really stand out. At times it was cute and cozy but other times I found things were blatantly convenient and they had me rolling my eyes. And this line stuck out for me - " Who got to be an adult and didn't even have a driver's license? " Lots of people. Don't be so ignorant.

The Copy

This is a very interesting, very readable, fast-paced novella. It's predictable but it's still fun to see what went on in between. Geoffrey Bartell's company and his marriage are both falling apart. The extremely long hours he puts in at work leaves him with no time for his wife and kids. He can't be in two places at once. Or can he? Unfortunately Bartell's answer is short-lived and he finds himself at the center of a criminal murder trial.

Hot Summer Reads: An Anthology of Erotic Stories

These short stories are very well written with the exception of Passion On the Potomac. There is nothing wrong with the story itself. I found the writing somewhat juvenile (man jam, love slime, throbber, etc.) which took away from the story. But the rest.. wow! ***** Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday - A young woman and her best friend go on a road trip down Route 66 in the very hot summer of '67. While trying to cool off in the back of a store one of the young women finds something that makes her hotter than the weather. **** Endless Summer - A guy takes the day off work and goes for a drive down memory lane. He ends up at his grandmother's old house where he and his brother used to spend several weeks of their summer vacations and unexpectedly runs into a childhood friend. (You will never forget either of their names, that's for sure.) **** The Darkness Next Door - A young man is living in a dangerous neighbourhood. He listens to the crying and screaming next door but there's not

Hampton Road

We start off with Billy. He has no idea where he's really at or why he's being held there against his will. He's being asked by a doctor to recount details about what happened that night on Hampton Road but he just can't remember. The story goes back and forth from Billy being in his current state of having amnesia to the events that happened during the last couple of months leading up to the incident. These flashbacks are told by Billy, his girlfriend Praxy and his best friend Charlie. The first chapter was good - it was interesting and humourous. Then the book was okay - some funny lines here and there, but it was all forgettable. Going into detail about motorcycles and the races was boring and a chore to get through sometimes. I didn't like how the ending was put together.

Doctor-Patient Confidentiality: Volume Two

Volume two picks up where volume one left off: Roni with Dexter Frost, the hot Doctor she has been sent to to find out what the pains in her stomach are. I liked the story, the characters, the cliffhanger. I can't wait to find out a little more in volume three!!

Beasts: 16 More Weird Stories

Some of these stories were okay but I found most of them lacking and confusing.

His Whole Life

This book is filled with two things: nothing and dead animals. What a waste of time!!  I won a copy through Goodreads First Reads.

Bleed

Miranda's wrists gush out blood. She doesn't know why or when it will happen. As if that isn't bad enough she has just enrolled at a new school which has been nicknamed "Suicide High" thanks to the increasing amount of suicides happening lately. It's here she bumps into a cute boy named Jake and learns that he has the power to predict the immediate future. Jake's friend, Sam, eats the sins of the dead. Two of their classmates also have special powers. Topher can heal by touch. Xyan can speak and understand all languages. When it becomes apparent that something or someone is behind the suicides, these five team up to destroy the evil that's running through their school. This isn't the kind of book I usually read but it sounded interesting. Definite points for originality. Xyan got on my nerves. I hate when I don't know what the characters are saying because of different languages. I didn't care for the last few chapters but overall the book

Kasey Screws Up The World

Kasey destroys her older sister's hip and dance career, her best friend's love life, and her own relationship with a cute boy she just met. And she abandons the dance team right before Nationals. No one will listen to her apologies so she starts a blog to tell her side of the story while also taking action to fix the lives she ruined. This book was well-written. It was never slow and boring. The story was unique and believable. I loved Kasey and Finn together.

Doctor-Patient Confidentiality: Volume One

In this short story, first in the series, we learn about Ramona "Roni" Gallo. She's a college student who is juggling two majors, has a full-time job and is worried about money. When she begins having stomach pains she thinks it's just stress. It takes a screw-up and demanding instructor for her to finally go to the clinic for a check-up.  The prologue is pretty intense. I absolutely loved it. But I didn't find the actual story had the same amount of depth - there was a different feel to the writing altogether, so the prologue was somewhat misleading. But it gives us a glimpse of what is to come! I can't wait to read more!

Slade House

I won a copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads :-) This book is: a page-turner, suspenseful, creative, complex, creepy, amazing. It's five short stories, set nine years apart beginning in 1979 and they're all connected by a haunted house.  Great writing. I didn't like the last story as much as the others, but still a great read.

The Hunter's Prayer

The author draws you in from the very beginning when a teenager and his parents are killed in their own home. The only thing that saves Ella is the fact that her father called in a favour and had a retired hitman looking out for her in Italy where she was vacationing with her boyfriend. When the police can't find answers she takes it upon herself to avenge the murders. A fast-paced thriller. You won't want to put this book down!

The Perfect Son

Full-time mother Ella devotes all her time to caring for and protecting Harry, her son with Tourette's and ADHD. Husband and father Felix spends all his time working. When Ella has a heart attack it turns their lives upside down. She can no longer care for Harry, Felix has to become a parent, and Harry worries about his mother while trying to impress his father and figure out his future.  The ending was not very well crafted at all. Some parts dragged on and on.

Mrs. Sinclair's Suitcase

Roberta collects the old letters, cards, lists.. whatever she finds in the old books she comes across while working at a second hand bookshop. Her grandmother is ancient and living in a care facility. Roberta has been given some of her belongings including a letter from the grandfather she never knew that was written after he died in the war. This book switches back and forth from present day Roberta to her grandmother, Dorothy, during World War II. Dorothy is unhappily married. While her husband is away at war she meets, and falls in love with, Squadron Leader Jan Pietrykowski.  Roberta sets out to find answers to the questions she has about the letter she found. I wanted to like this book but it was just blah. I love the concept of the old book store and finding and collecting old letters. But that was it. Roberta's story was flat and boring. I didn't like it after her cat died, to be honest. Dorothy's story wasn't bad until near the end. It just went on and on and on

Alice Cooper Vol. 1: Welcome to My Nightmare

I love the concept - a comic book about rock legend Alice Cooper with demons and nightmares. Along with the illustrations that's all I loved. The writing wasn't great. It was sometimes confusing. I couldn't wait to finish it so it'd be over with. Disappointing.

Academy Girls

This novel takes us back and forth between present day Jane Milton - reluctantly returning to her old boarding school as a first time teacher because she is out of options to pay back her ex-husband's debt. And Jane Milton 35-years ago, during her senior year at Grove Academy. Jane and her two best friends Kat and Lissa are convinced their English teacher was involved in an unsolved murder that took place on school grounds. They dissect lines and lines of poetry looking for clues that will prove she's guilty. Thanks to her least favourite student, and an old friend and now colleague, present day Jane is able to finally uncover several truths and put the past to rest. A really solid story. Filled with good writing, backstabbing, mystery and intrigue. And unfortunately poetry.

Death on Ibiza

A flat, predictable, boring, anticlimactic book about a personal trainer who ends up working for the son of one of the island's richest men. He wakes up with no memory of the wild party that went on the night before and finds himself among a bunch of corpses, wearing a blood-soaked shirt with a gun in his hand. Did he kill all these people? I'm sure you can guess the answer. I considered abandoning it, but I can't not finish a book.

The Angel of Eden

I could tell before I finished the first page that this book was going to be good. John Madison is an art and antiquities dealer living in New York. He has been hired by a famous magician to find a rare sixteenth century book on angel magic and the former assistant who stole it and disappeared 35 years ago. In order to do this John must travel to Turkey and Iran where he not only discovers the true location of the Garden of Eden but also who he really is.  Great descriptions, interesting facts, short chapters (but lots of them!) The author makes you feel as though you're along for the ride. I won a copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads.

Stop The Diet, I Want To Get Off!

Cotton ball diet? Really? There are lots of (crazy) fad diets out there and it's easy to get caught up in them when you want to shed those unwanted pounds, but the reality is that you have to eat right and exercise. The author does a good job of listing healthy foods and portions and how many calories we can burn during certain activities. She gives us tips on how to start our journey as well as websites that may help. It's a good book to have around the house.  I won a copy through Goodreads First Reads.

12

12 We take a look into the lives of twelve people - people who have their own problems and are trying to do what they believe is the right thing. Read about how we ended up at Goldman's Diner, who pulled the trigger and who made it out alive. An intense read with believable situations and good character depth.

Manhattan Mayhem: New Crime Stories from Mystery Writers of America

A collection of 17 short stories. ****The Five-Dollar Dress by Mary Higgins Clark - A young woman's grandmother has recently passed away. While going through her things she finds a vital clue to a murder that happened long ago. *****White Rabbit by Julie Hyzy - A young woman is reading a copy of "Alice in Wonderland" near the Alice in Wonderland statue. A persistent man approaches her and insists on making small talk until he finds out why she chose to read that book near that statue on this particular day. *The Picture of the Lonely Diner by Lee Child - I didn't understand this one. ***Three Little Words by Nancy Pickard - A young woman with a few weeks left to live makes a bucket list.  ***Damage Control by Thomas H. Cook - After finding out about his former foster child's death, a man thinks back to the time they were a family and what led to his decision that she could no longer stay with him and his family. ***The Day After Victory by Brendan Dubois - An old

The Hesitation Cut

Lauren Wolfe is a troubled young writer who comes to the monastery in search of books on Heloise and Abelard. A hesitant Brother William, a Benedictine Monk, is the one assigned the task of helping her in the library. When Brother William notices scars on her wrists from a failed suicide attempt he leaves the monastery behind and tracks Lauren down in New York City. There he is known as Peter and he is on a mission to save Lauren and to show her the love and devotion he has for her. A suspenseful, easy to read book. I won this book through Goodreads First Reads.

Snoopy: Contact!

SNOOPY COMICS!! Automatic five stars!!

Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness

I won this book through Goodreads First Reads. I entered because: the description was unlike any book I've read before, it had high ratings, and everyone mentioned the beautiful writing. I hated the writing. This book was basically Mayumi over-analyzing absolutely everything. Everything went on and on and there was way too much shit in parenthesis (I found it to be VERY distracting) I find the whole thing very hard to believe - everyone knew and was okay with what was going on? Mayumi annoyed me to no end. She was a very childish 41-year-old woman. I was embarrassed by some of her actions and words towards the young man. She was like a prepubescent girl with her first crush not a married, grown-up woman with a four-year-old child to take care of. The two women needed some sense slapped into them.

Go Away Home

There aren't many options for a young woman growing up on a family farm in the early 1900's, but Liddie Treadway is determined to pursue a career instead of getting married and starting a family. She patiently waits for the day when both of her parents agree to let her work as a seamstress in town. Several obstacles are thrown into Liddie's path but eventually her dream comes true. She loves her independence, her employer, and her new friend Minnie. She even has a new-found passion: photography; but she misses her family and friends and the life she once had at the farm. Liddie must decide what she truly wants - a life of adventure or a life of love. I wanted to like this book. I felt as though the characters were mostly one-dimensional and flat. The book itself is forgettable.

The Turtle Boy

Summer has just begun and eleven-year-old Timmy Quinn and his best friend Pete are looking for something to do in their small, boring town of Delaware. They go down to Myers Pond where they discover an odd looking boy sitting on the bank.  This is a really solid short story, and the first in the series about Timmy Quinn. Good writing, interesting story, never dull. I look forward to reading the next one!

Somebody I Used to Know

Nick Hansen makes a trip to the grocery store one day and sees a young woman who looks exactly like his college girlfriend, Marissa. But Marissa died in a fire twenty years ago and when he tries to speak to the young woman, she gets spooked and runs off. The next morning the police arrive at his apartment bright and early to show him a photo of the young woman at the grocery store. She was murdered and a piece of paper was found in her pocket with his name and address on it. Nick is convinced there's a connection between the two women. With the help of his friend, Laurel, who happens to be a cop, they dig deep into the past and begin to unravel one hell of a story. This book was so good! It was a suspenseful, well-written novel - it flowed together well and the characters were three-dimensional. I'm an animal lover, so I was rooting for Riley the whole way!

The Lady Taken: Part 2

Wolf is still holding Lady Killane for ransom. She is locked away in a beautiful room underground where she is served three meals a day and is allowed to bathe and read. She still struggles with her feelings for Wolf but she's also thinking hard about how to escape from the den. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Reading the Sweet Oak

Tulsa loves the river, canoeing, the birds and critters, the scenery in the Ozarks and she especially loves her grandmother Ruby. Together they run the Sweet Oak River Oasis - a canoe rental business that sits on a river that threads the Ozark hills. Widowed for thirty years and still missing her husband, Ruby knows the joys that love can bring and wants her granddaughter to experience those joys herself. But Tulsa has no time for anything except running the Oasis. When her grandmother suggests she read a romance novel Tulsa reluctantly agrees out of the love she has for Ruby. Unbeknownst to Tulsa, Ruby has created a romance novel book club. Their friends Pearl, BJ, and Jen get together to discuss books but end up learning about forgiveness, taking chances, and love. I really loved the setting of this book and the strong bond of friendship these women shared. I also loved when BJ responded to her doctor's orders to find a man's love with "Jesus loves me" and he told h

A Slow Burn

The author knows how to craft her words into a really good story. Annabelle Macon returns home from New York after being fired from her job. Sheriff Jackson Storme hasn't seen Anna in a decade but the minute he lays eyes on her he knows that she's the one for him. I can't wait to read more!

The Dark Side of the Rainbow

I really liked the description of this book which is basically: Olivia Nelson had a close relationship with her brother and when he died it destroyed her life. Landon Gray was the one responsible for Olivia's brother's death and she plans to get her revenge. She transforms herself into a completely different person and travels from the United States to Argentina with her mind set on the revenge she has wanted for so many years. After the accident, Landon went to Argentina to get away from what happened and to be with his sister. Not a day goes by that he's not tormented by the guilt he still carries around. When Brooke arrives at his resort he is immediately drawn to her. As Olivia (now Brooke) starts spending more and more time with Landon she begins to doubt if she can go through with her plan.  It started off good but then it became boring to me. It was a whole lot of fancy eating and them just doing stuff. I hate to say it but I didn't overly care for this book.

The Lady Taken: Part 1

It's the late 1800's and Lady Killane, a bold and wealthy widow, is on her way with her lover to a party when their carriage is overtaken by highwaymen.  Wolf, the leader, takes Lady Killane for ransom. They're drawn to one another and she has to decide if she wants to escape or give in to her desire for Wolf. So far, so good.

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks

The book started off slow and nothing really happened throughout, but I loved it anyway. I love Lockhart's novels. Frankie is a strong and clever young woman who feels as though she is as deserving, maybe more so, to be a part of the all-male secret society at the boarding school she attends. She is determined to prove that she is more than just a pretty girl who needs to be protected.

Wildflower Hill

I read this because: it was recommended to me by Goodreads based on my "favourites" shelf it has a high rating I loved the title This book was extremely boring. I liked the first little bit of the book as told from Beattie's point of view. The chapters were long and filled with nothing. This story goes back and forth between Beattie and her granddaughter, Emma. It starts off with Beattie as a young woman in the 1920's and follows her to Wildflower Hill. After her grandmother's death, and her career-ending injury, Emma has found she has inherited Wildflower Hill.

Catherine Dickens: Outside the Magic Circle

This book was interesting. The author gives Catherine Dickens a voice so she may speak about her marriage and separation to Charles Dickens. After a 21-year marriage and 10 children together Charles Dickens no longer wishes to be married to Catherine. He convinces most people to believe the lies he makes up about her and what it had been like to be married to her in order to take the heat off himself for leaving. He also would not allow the children to see or talk to their mother. He made me so angry!
